A Detroit native and miniature artist, I'm a Kresge honoree and NEA fellow. I've received grants from MI and the Vogelstein Found., NYC, and two fellowships from Art Matters, NYC, among others. I've had solos at The Flint Inst. of Arts and The Detroit Inst. of Arts, as well as The University of MI Museum of Art, Ann Arbor. Villa Montalvo, CA, and Bellagio, Italy, number among my residencies. Group shows have included the LGBTQ+ “Mighty Real/Queer Detroit” exhibits, 2022 and 2024; The Detroit Historical Museum; The Butler Inst. of Amer. Art, Youngstown, OH; and The Academy, Venice, Italy.
My work opened the floodgates into the gay community in the early 1990s as I sought to enlighten the public about the LGBTQ+ community and to expand people's perceptions about the common bonds we all shared. As a gay artist, I strove to give my history the sanctity usually denied it, and I have remained vigilant in this cause to the present day. My website is: www.carls-artwork.com.
My entry shows Grant Wood’s sister, Nan Wood Graham, in her mid-eighties, with red-winged blackbirds perched on her shoulder and nestled in her hair. Behind her, Carla DeWild, one of my gay personas, is portraying “Renfield” from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” I’m hungrily contemplating the cricket on Nan’s fingertips. Here, I’ve represented myself as an androgynous character in a narrative, which connects it to my ongoing investigation of gender identity.
